The Brother Phenomenon/Force

When one brother plays baseball, they all play want to play baseball.  When one brother likes a certain video game, they all want to find out what that video game is all about. It's a brother phenomenon, or something like the force from Star Wars.

My three boys are all individuals with their own interests and personalities, but they are also part of this brother phenomenon/force.  It's so interesting to watch the little brothers imitating and wanting to be like the big brothers.

My boys share a room, sports equipment and very busy lives. The little boys are always watching the older brothers.

"With all of this comes great responsibility," I told my oldest son the other day, sounding sort of like Master Yoda from The Empire Strikes Back.

The youngest and the oldest brother.

My oldest is responsible and smart and kind. He is also a bit quiet and sometimes uncertain of himself. Think Luke Skywalker.

If I were to compare my younger sons to characters from Star Wars, I honestly might say they are like Han Solo and Chewbacca (or "Chewie").  All bravado and confidence and good times. They are also loyal and loving and funny.

The little brothers are becoming more and more like a package deal lately.  Wade is the bat boy for JT's baseball team. JT is proud of him and Wade is elated to be included.

Everything they do is a competition.  "I'll beat you to the front door," one of them always says when they get out of the car.  They play hard together and they fight big too.
Peyton, the oldest brother, looked at this picture and said "what are you going to do when these two are teenagers and I am in college?" Even he understands these two
are going to take us on a wild ride.

More and more I see that my job as the Master Yoda in all this is to try to teach them to use the force for good. I have to learn to sit back and let them make mistakes. Ahhhhh. I need to give them tools to help them on their journey.  Sure I can't teach my boys how to levitate an X-Wing Fighter out of Degobah swamp, but I can teach them some things. I can teach them to be kind and supportive of each other. I can teach them to use their competitiveness in positive ways.

It's the little things, it's the big things, it's everything.

Last week, the little boys got new toothbrushes and even that turned into a competition.  There was a little pushing in front of the sink and some harsh words were spoken. But just like Yoda, I walked into the bathroom and told them in a wise, calm voice to "push the buttons on the toothbrushes and be quiet and wait and to listen."

Their new Firefly® Star Wars toothbrushes are shaped like light sabers and when you push the buttons they make sounds like in a light saber battle and say things like "the force is with you."  My boys were/are extremely impressed.

Wade, who is in preschool, especially loved his new toothbrush and has even made a chart to keep track of how often he brushes his teeth. No more bribing my kids to get them to brush. The toothbrushes are extremely affordable and ADA-approved.

Not only were they impressed, they brushed their teeth without a real battle (with each other or me). Even the biggest brother thought their new toothbrushes were pretty cool. He looked into the bathroom and gave them an approving Skywalker-like nod. The little boys stood up a little straighter after that and brushed with pride and brotherly love.

So like I said, it may not be a lesson in mind control or levitation, but it matters. It's all a part of the bigger picture.  It all matters as we teach our little Padawans to take care of themselves and each other and to use the brother phenomenon/force for good.

You know what else is good? Winning a trip to California. Yup, it's the #BrushBattle Sweepstakes from the folks at Firefly. Click here http://bit.ly/FireflyBrushBattle for a chance to enter to win a trip for four to an "awesome theme park" in California.  Good luck and may the force be with you!

Firefly® is a leader in Children's Oral Care solutions and the inventor of the Ready Go Brush. The toothbrushes are really fun and come in other popular characters such as Angry Birds, Hello Kitty, Marvel and more. The toothbrushes have interacting flashing lights and 60-second timers that help teach kids healthy habits that will last a lifetime.

My Boys & Baseball

Baseball is part of the fabric of our family.

I love baseball.  But more than that, I love the way my boys love baseball.  It is pure.  It is deep.  It is what baseball movies are all about.

This is one of our favorite movies around here...The Sandlot.

I love the way my boys will sleep with their mitts (and even baseballs), compare baseball cards and play catch all. the. time.

I love that when my oldest son went on his first sleepover at his cousin's house, he called his dad to talk Detroit Tigers' stats when he got a little homesick.

I love how they have always played baseball anywhere--in the backyard, on the beach, in the park, in the kitchen.  They use bats, they use sticks as tees for the little boys' wiffle balls, they use kitchen spoons as bats.

I love how in both homes we've lived in the backyard has become a baseball diamond.  I love how the neighbors know we are the ones with the bases and they play and play and play.
We may not have the nicest grass, but need a batting helmet?
Um, we have plenty of those.

I love how there is no tackling in baseball (as a mom of three boys, this is a big one).

I love watching my oldest teach my youngest how to swing the bat or throw a pitch.
After a tournament, before school, after school, in the summer or in the winter...any time, any season it's about baseball.

I love how our family can watch nine innings of any game (from little league to major league).

I love how they always bring their mitts to minor league games just in case a foul ball comes their way.

Baseball is my boys' life.  Their love may fade as they get older.  They might choose different sports, different interests.  But right now, I love the way they love baseball.

This Dick's Sporting Goods commercial makes me tear up every time I watch it...they get it.

Brotherly Love and What I Know For Sure (this week)

My kids were off from school last Monday and Tuesday.  It was a good four day weekend, but it was a long four day weekend.  The whole tortuous wonderful four-day run ended with a bang on Tuesday night.  No, not the whole re-election bang.  It was a literal bang to the head, JT's head.

Wade hit JT in the head with a curtain rod.  I like to think that Wade wasn't trying to hit him on purpose, but I can't be sure.  Anyway, JT's head started to gush blood.  If you've read my blog for more than one day, you know that I am not what you call a calm mom.  Or a mom that doesn't get emotional or hysterical.  And blood all over one of my baby's heads? You better believe I got pretty fucking hysterical.

"Oh my god! Call your father!  What the hell! Get a towel!," I screamed.  My older kids jumped into action and their father jumped in his car and headed home.

The cut turned out to be small, but probably should have been stitched. (I took him to the doctor the next morning and she confirmed my thoughts, but we walked away with no stitches and a flu shot.) Okay, that story isn't the crazy part.  The crazy part is the way JT forgave Wade.

If someone whacked me in the head hard enough to make it bleed, I don't think I would've been so forgiving.  But they moved on and fast.  Tuesday night as the country was gearing up for a big angry divide, my boys were coming together.  It's crazy, but it's true.  I feel like there's a lesson in here.

Brotherly love, it's a powerful thing...that I know for sure.

Here's what else I know for sure (this week):

  • Voting with four kids was an adventure...here's how it went down at my precinct if you missed it.

  • I am too old to stay up late more than one night during the week.  Election night and then a Madonna concert? Too much!

  • The campaigning hasn't stopped, help me get to 1,000 Twitter (@AngelaYBlood) followers by Christmas.  Why?  Why not?  Click here to follow me and please, spread the word.

  • Shoulders take forever to heal.  My husband, Tim, who had shoulder surgery two weeks ago is doing really well.  And making a speedy recovery, so say his doctors.  I miss the old Tim.  I'm ready for everything (him) to be back to normal.  Boo shoulder surgery/recovery.
Tim is a great dad.  Here he is playing Legos with one arm.

  • Laughing is contagious.  I don't care if you buy a VW, I love this commercial though.
