4 (Pinterest Poser Challenge)

Yesterday was Wade's birthday.  He ran down the stairs at 6 a.m. fully dressed and asked "where's my party?"  He was ready to celebrate being four.   We didn't have a party planned, just a family dinner, cake and a few presents.  With all the kids at school and a preschooler with no sense of time I had a feeling it was going to be a long day.  I needed to find ways to keep him busy and honor his excitement about being 4.  Pinterest to the rescue.  Today's Pinterest Poser is brought to you by the number 4.

**In an attempt at not being a Pinterest Poser,* every week I  detail a new Pinterest challenge whether it be a new recipe or a craft.   *My definition of a Pinterest Poser is someone who is all pins and no substance.

Name Banner/Garland

(Inspired by a DIY Alphabet Garland pinned from Babble.com.)

Materials:
Old boxes
Paper
Alphabet template (download free here)
Scissors
Paint
Ribbon

Print the letters you need and start cutting.  Then trace the letter on the box and start cutting again.

Once all the letters are traced and cut out, get out the paints and let your kid go nuts.  I  guess you could get fancy and paint your own designs and make the letters look Pinterest perfect.  My goal was to make Wade feel special and keep him busy, so for our project I let him paint whatever he wanted.

I'm far from a homeschooler, but we did make it a little lesson about letters and colors which was fun.

In lieu of a hole puncher, I used one side of my scissors to cut the holes for the ribbon (not recommended).  To make the letters sit on the string or ribbon evenly, two holes are needed per letter.  Then loop string, ribbon or even a piece of yarn through the holes and display.  This could be a fun project to keep up in a playroom or a child's bedroom.  And it is something you and your child can do together.

Cake Topper-How Old Are You
(Inspired by several different pictures on Pinterest.)

Materials:
cake, frosting and M&M's

I am not a very creative cake baker/creator/maker.  Remember my Barbie cake that turned out looking like a stripper coming out of a cake?

But this one, is a little easier.  It's M&M's in the shape of the number four.  Wade and I put the M&M's on together.  It was cute.  And yes, I needed Pinterest to inspire me to make this.  I would not have thought of it on my own.

The Birthday Shirt

(Inspired by this cool project that I want to try for my own sweater/shirt soon.)

Since Wade is totally digging turning four, I thought I'd make him a special shirt to mark the occasion. I mean we should all have special shirts for special days, right?  While Wade painted his banner/garland, I made this shirt.  It cost $7 and looked so cute.

Materials:
shirt or sweater
scissors
felt
adhesive strip
pattern

I bought the long sleeve shirt at Target for $5, the yellow felt square for 34 cents and the adhesive strip for $2 at JoAnn Fabrics.  I Googled the number 4 and printed an image I liked.

I cut out the image and traced it onto the felt.  Cut the felt, cut the adhesive and placed it on the shirt where I wanted it.

I then followed the adhesive directions: dampen the felt, then with a hot iron press for 10 seconds, repeat as necessary until the fabric holds.  It took quite a few times, but finally it worked.

Wade was proud to wear his shirt, he was proud of his banner, he was proud to be the fabulous number 4.
It didn't take a lot of money to make him feel special and loved and important and keep him busy.  It didn't look perfect, but we had fun and then we ate cake when everyone got home.
