The Best Man/Father

When I met Tim I knew he'd be a good father. I watched him with my little brother when we were dating. I knew he'd be attentive and playful and loving.  At least I mean I could picture what it might look like if we ever had kids.  But I really had no idea until we actually had kids what Tim would be like as a father. And I really had no way of picturing the father he has become or the man, he has exceeded any expectations I had all those years ago.

Tim is old school.  He is the kind of dad that does everything he can for his kids. He works hard to give them a good life. If they need something extra or try out for a sports team that costs extra, Tim works harder. For example, he works summer school in his district to help pay for travel baseball teams for the boys.

He is never late to anything. He strongly believes in commitment, respect and loyalty to school work and teachers, teammates and coaches, and each member of our family.  Tim comes from a family that mostly still lives in the area, has Fourth of July picnics and Christmas parties at Lions' Club banquet halls, that kisses hello and good-bye every time they see each other, and that respects their elders in a way that you see in movies and old TV shows.

Three generations of Youngbloods.

He loves football and Led Zepplin and cheeseburgers and his family.

Tim is also surprisingly not so typically old-school.  He married me for one thing, a liberal, emotional, always running late, scattered, noncommittal mess. He says I "keep life interesting."  He also says I give him insight into what it's like to have a "brain that's full of color."  Um, which means Tim is compassionate and patient and loving.  And he's carried all of this into fatherhood.  He gets that some of our kids got a little of my wiring and he is just as compassionate, patient and loving with them as he is with me.

I joke around that he truly sees me like Oprah says all people want to be seen, but it's really no joke. He truly sees me and loves me.  He sees our children and loves them. Tim is the kind of dad that shows us all what unconditional love is.

Tim is the kind of dad that gives up drinking because he knows the genetic land mine we're passing onto our children. He wasn't an alcoholic, but he said he saw patterns he didn't like in himself and wanted to give our kids a different example.

He not only gives all his goodness to us, he gives a hundred percent to the students at his high school and the kids he coaches. He cares about them and believes in them and roots for them. He mentors young men who need a second or third chance in life.

Tim is the best parts of old school combined with open-minded compassion.  He supports, encourages, challenges, uplifts and loves. He reads stories, draws pictures, plays games, listens to daydreams, helps with homework, believes in second and third chances.

He is undconditional love. He is the glue to our family and the best man I've ever known.

A Thank You Kind of Weekend

This past weekend was good.  We were all together which is rare.  Usually, Tim and I divide and conquer shuffling and chauffeuring kids to various activities.  But this weekend it was different and it was so good.

This weekend was one of those times where I looked around me at my little corner of the world and said, "yes, this is it, this is my dream life, and thank you, thank you, thank you."

I was less scattered, more focused; less nobody is listening or doing what I say!, more I'm going to sit back and take it in; less I'm so full of stress and tired, more I'm so full of love and tired (um, yeah, even though it was a good weekend, I don't think I'll ever not be tired, that just seems never ending).

Fifteen years ago, I watched my boyfriend playing football with my little brother who was seven at the time.  I watched how patient he was and how he looked him in the eyes.  I marveled at the connection he made and the time he devoted.  I fell in love with him and dreamed about what kind of father he would be to my own kids.  This past weekend, I thought of that boyfriend and once again marveled at the man, the father, he is today and found myself saying "yes, this is it, this is the dream life and thank you, thank you, thank you."

Tim is the dad that plays, teaches, coaches, reads, provides, comforts and did I mention play?
He really is Super Man
(just like his costume for the
Kids vs. Dad wrestle mania event).
And he makes the kids laugh and laugh and laugh.

This has sort of turned into a mushy, belated Father's Day post. But really it's a post about those weekends, those moments in time, where you look around filled with gratitude.  Those moments where the same messy closet that drove you nuts the day before just doesn't bother you; or the stack of bills that gave you a mini panic attack the night before doesn't even phase you the next morning.  Those moments where you look at your husband and you fall deeper in love.   Those moments when it's all good and you want to say thank you, thank you, thank you.

This is is drop the mic and walk away all big and bad moment, because well, he's Super Man.
Ha. Ha. I'm kidding this is on the way home from our walk to Dairy Queen.

Weekend Update and The Kid Whisperer

This picture looks like the cover of an album from the 1970s or a pamphlet on addiction.
With only one week left of summer vacation, we are living it up with lots of: baseball, baseball and more baseball;
Baby Wade can't wait to get in the game.
BBQs, picnics and breakfasts outside;
You can't beat breakfast outside.
boat rides on the lake; grandparents and cousins; and lots of hanging out.
Breakfast outside again AND cousins? Summer=awesome.
Yes, there are two babies underneath the plastic picnic table. Yes, there are.
Sometimes in this business of parenting, managing a family, organizing (or at least attempting to) a life, you can forget to sit back and enjoy it.  That is normally not a huge problem for me.  But I will admit to possibly not appreciating my partner in crime enough-my husband, Tim.  I also admit to possibly being a little overcritical and naggy.  You might say a bit of an overemotional, control freak (um the worst kind of control freak by the way). Gasp! I know shocking, right?

But it is jam packed summer weekends that remind me why I love this man.  Why I agreed to the whole "let's have another baby" suggestion over and over.  Because he's amazing.  I feel like gagging a little at the mushy sentiment.  Seriously, I would probably make fun of other people writing crap like this.  So have at it, make fun if you will.  I can take it.

Because Tim isn't the perfect guy for everybody.  You've got your perfect or you're looking and will hopefully find your perfect.  Tim is a perfect match for me because he is laid back and supportive.  He's funny and more importantly he thinks I'm funny (most of the time).  He's a good listener I think.  One time I asked him how in the hell he could deal with my crazy mother when we used to visit her.  "How can you just sit there so calmly and listen to her go on and on and on?," I asked.  He proceeded to boast about his amazing secret talent of tuning out and just looking like he's listening. I was like wait, what?

Way back when I first fell in love with him, my littlest brother was 7 years old.  I was amazed at how well he played with him.  Not just played with him, but connected.  He was like a kid whisperer.  I knew he would be a good father and that made me love him even more and think he just might be my perfect match.

Even after this whole busy business of managing life has taken its toll (and believe me, we may be a perfect match, but we are so fucking far from perfect and a toll has been taken), he is still a kid whisperer.  This weekend with our own kids and his nieces and nephews, it was in full effect.  And I fell in love with him even more, even after all these years.

Fun with a patriotic ping pong game.

Tim looks thrilled to be holding two cute babies, although Wade looks a little pissed that his cousin Mia is getting his dad's attention.

That's what summer is about, right?  Relaxing into the moment, soaking up the sun and remembering what's good about life.
***Okay on a totally neurotic, pessimistic note, I am a bit worried that I am loving life so much lately that I'm setting myself up for a terrible fall (oooh no pun intended,  seriously I meant the season).  Ugh.  Sorry, the crazy in me is always waiting for the other shoe to fall, if you will.  The superstitious in me is writing this to cover the bases, if you will.
